As modern society becomes more accepting of the LGBT community, it’s important to remember that same-sex relationships have been a part of human history for thousands of years.
There are many examples of ancient LGBT people throughout history, some of which we’ve highlighted in this post. This highlights that being gay is not new.
Famous Ancient LGBT People
Sappho the Poet
Sappho was born on the island of Lesbos in the 7th century BC. She was a poet and songwriter, and her works were widely read and celebrated throughout ancient Greece.
She wrote many love poems to other women, and her poetry is regarded as one of the earliest expressions of female same-sex desire.
Despite her fame and influence, Sappho’s personal life remains a mystery. Only some details about her have survived, and what we do know comes from references by other writers.
Some scholars believe that Sappho may have been married and had children, while others argue that she remained unmarried and devoted herself entirely to her poetry and female lovers.
Regardless of her personal life details, Sappho’s poetry has had a lasting impact on the representation of same-sex desire in literature and art. Her work has been studied, translated, and adapted in countless ways, and her name has become synonymous with female homosexuality.
Sappho the Poet
Emperor Ai of Han was born in 27 BC in China during the Han dynasty. He ascended to the throne in 7 BC, and during his reign, he was known for his intelligence, kindness, and love of literature. He was also known for his relationships with several male courtiers, including Dong Xian, whom he loved deeply.
According to historical accounts, Emperor Ai was so devoted to Dong Xian that he neglected his duties as emperor to spend time with him. One famous story tells of how Emperor Ai cut off his sleeve rather than disturb Dong Xian while he slept. This devotion has become a symbol of same-sex love in Chinese culture.
Despite his relationships with men, Emperor Ai was married to a woman and had an heir. However, he never forgot his love for Dong Xian. After Dong Xian’s death, he famously mourned him for years, refusing to eat or drink and neglecting his duties as emperor. Emperor Ai’s devotion to Dong Xian has been celebrated in Chinese literature and art for centuries.
Hadrian the Emperor
Hadrian was born in AD 76 in Rome and ascended to the throne in AD 117. He is known for his many accomplishments as emperor, including constructing the famous Hadrian’s Wall in northern England. However, he is also remembered for his relationship with a young man named Antinous.
Hadrian met Antinous during a trip to Egypt in AD 130. According to some accounts, Antinous was a servant or enslaved person in Hadrian’s entourage, while others suggest he was a Greek youth of great beauty. Whatever the circumstances of their meeting, Hadrian was deeply smitten with Antinous, and the two became lovers.
Antinous tragically died under mysterious circumstances in AD 130 while on a trip to the Nile with Hadrian. Some accounts suggest that he drowned, while others hint at foul play. Whatever the cause of his death, Hadrian was devastated. He had Antinous deified, and he founded a city in his honour called Antinopolis. He also commissioned countless statues and monuments of Antinous, which were placed throughout the empire.
Hadrian’s relationship with Antinous has been the subject of much speculation and interpretation over the centuries. Some scholars believe it was a purely romantic relationship, while others suggest it was part of a larger political strategy. Regardless of the nature of their relationship, it is clear that Hadrian was deeply affected by Antinous’s death, and he remained devoted to his memory for the rest of his life.
Native Cultures & LGBT Symbolism
Now, let’s look at some examples of native cultures throughout ancient times and over the years and their stance and belief systems regarding LGBT people.
Two-Spirit
The Two-Spirit people are a group of Native Americans who have both male and female spirits within them. They are believed to have unique gifts and are often revered in their communities.
The Two-Spirit tradition, which has been suppressed mainly by colonialism, is significant in Native American cultures due to its unique spiritual and societal roles, its connection to gender diversity, and other factors. There are plenty of efforts to revive and celebrate Two-Spirit culture today.
Hijra Community
Hijra is a term used to refer to transgender and intersex people in South Asia, particularly in India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. The Hijra community has a long history, dating back to ancient times, and has been an integral part of South Asian culture for centuries.
Hindu mythology references Hijras, including Lord Rama’s encounter with a group of Hijras during his exile.
In the story, the Hijras bless Rama and ask for his protection, and in return, Rama grants them the power to confer blessings and curses.
This story symbolises the Hijra community’s place in Hindu mythology and its importance in South Asian culture.
Throughout history, Hijras have occupied a unique place in South Asian society. They have often been revered as spiritual leaders and healers, and their blessings are believed to have the power to bring good luck and ward off evil spirits.
However, they have also faced discrimination and marginalisation, and many have been forced to live in poverty and isolation.
Despite these challenges, the Hijra community continued to thrive, and in recent years, there has been a growing awareness and acceptance of their rights and identities.
In 2014, the Supreme Court of India recognised Hijras as a third gender. Since then, efforts have been made to ensure they have access to healthcare, education, and employment opportunities.
Being Gay Is Not New
The stories of these ancient LGBT individuals and cultures provide a window into a rich, diverse history often overlooked or marginalised in mainstream narratives. By exploring these stories, we can better understand how sexual and gender diversity have existed in human societies throughout history.
